Are you distracted by all the noise around you?

I’ve had hearing aids for almost 2 years now. Or maybe it’s 3 – I don’t even remember. I have needed them for several years though.

However, after this past checkup and update I’ve been unhappy with them. The outside noise overrides what I’m really trying to hear. My shoulder injury kept me from getting it figured out and I have an appointment next week I think.

But this got me thinking. When I’m out walking, I’m always listening to some sort of audiobook. It streams through the hearing aid right into my ear canal and up to my ear drum. You’d think that would be perfect wouldn’t you?

Alas it’s not. Even though the tips of the hearing aid are stuck down into my ear canal and it should block other noise, it doesn’t.

In fact the ambient noise sounds like a tornado and overrides anything I’m listening too.

This is just like life sometimes. Have you ever been trying to concentrate on something that was important and the outside activity- the noise so to speak – was so loud you couldn’t think?

What happens to you then? How do your feel? How much do you miss out on? I know that all that traffic and airplane noise drowns out everything that’s close to my eardrums- all the thoughts and ideas I’m trying to pay attention to because they are vital at that moment.

Life is so busy nowadays that we have to have strategies to keep from being distracted by all that outside interference. It’s easy to let someone’s conversation keep you from having your mind on the task at hand.

Ear plugs would work for people who don’t need hearing aids or use ear pods. But for the others it’s extremely difficult not to be aggravated and annoyed with this bothersome cacophony around us.

If you feel distracted all the time maybe this is why and it might Improve if you just take steps to block out the extraneous noises

Be aware of this phenomenon so that you can figure out your own way to keep your eye on the ball so to speak. Oh and don’t drive by me or fly your airplane over my walking route.

Daily Gratitude

Daily Gratitude: I think this is important for us at this time. But since I know many people won’t be able to embrace this on a macro level, I want you to think about this statement defining “world” as your world – your family, your career, your friends etc.

Think about some disagreement or even just a less than pleasant discussion you may have had with someone.  The further back in time the better to start with.

Does it still bother you? Was it something really that much of an issue?  Is it important today? Or have you moved on to other issues perhaps?  Was it even as bothersome the next day or did you cool off some. Or perhaps as they say was it overcome by events (OBE)?

Remember that when you get upset or angry (and even just anxious) your frontal lobes shut down. When they stop working, you’re not responding with any logic or careful thought.

Can you take that pause (from the two arrow concept- the pause between arrows) and wait before you decide how something is going to affect you? So what if someone cut you off in traffic? Do you really believe that the other driver intended to make you made and is a bad person? Of that you’re a victim all the time and that makes you mad? Is it worth that much to get so upset? What are you really upset about?  That is the key question.

How do your routines impact others?

You’ve reached Talking with Dr Terrie – 180 seconds to a better you message number 289 snd I’m Dr Terrie Wurzbacher

I was late doing yesterday’s message and am a little later than usual today too.

I can hear your responses now “So what’s going on? How can she do that? I always listen at such and such a time.“

For the switch up I apologize. I was getting up between 2:30 and 3 so that I could make the call before most people start their day and most are an hour ahead of me.

I was doing this while trying to heal my shoulder and it began to catch up to me health wise. So yesterday I decided to sleep later but didn’t anticipate being that late. However yesterday was the best I’ve felt in months.

So I have to reassess when I do the call so I can be healthy but also not disrupt your routines too much.

The point to all this babbling is that I imagine you all have routines. But have you ever wondered how your specific routine or routines impact other people?

Sometimes we go about our business without thinking of the second and third order effects. Let’s say you want to train for a marathon. That takes a lot of time away from home. If you have a spouse and maybe some kids, this training will impact not only your spouse but other family members too.

I’ll tell you that on my vol state podcast almost everyone with a family talks about needing to clear it with the family and how they themselves recognize it’s a selfish undertaking.

Perhaps we should be more cognizant of talking with others before we change or install a routine.

Again thank you for bearing with me during this adjustment period. I need to be as healthy as possible to give you the best of me.
